Is AI Replacing Graphic Designers or Just Changing How They Work?
With all the new AI tools that can create logos, photos, and graphics in just a few seconds, you might be wondering, is graphic design going to be replaced by AI? AI has changed how a lot of design work is done. But that doesn’t mean creative graphic designers are no longer needed.
At Full Scope Creative, we use AI in our graphic design work. It’s a great tool for coming up with ideas, testing concepts, and even learning more about who we’re trying to reach. But it’s still our designers, their creativity, skills, and passion that make the final designs work.
AI can create something that looks pretty cool. Making something that works for a business and connects with its customers takes a lot more than that.
AI Is a Tool for Creative Graphic Designers
One of the biggest changes AI has brought to graphic design is how quickly we can come up with and test new ideas.
We’ve been using AI at Full Scope Creative to help with a number of tasks. Some of the ways we use it include:
- Coming up with new design ideas and concepts.
- Exploring different styles and directions for a project.
- Researching customer demographics.
- Testing ideas without spending loads of time.
- Planning how a design might work with other marketing materials.
These tools can save us time and help us think about ideas we might not have considered right away.
But AI isn’t doing all the graphic design work for us. Our designers are still making the decisions. We know what we’re trying to create, who we’re trying to reach, and how the final design needs to work.
Think of AI as another tool in a designer’s toolbox. Having a great set of tools doesn’t automatically make someone great at using them.
AI is a great tool, but creative designers make the difference. At Full Scope Creative, we combine creativity, experience, and modern tools to design logos, branding, and marketing materials that look great and work for your business. Let’s talk about your next design project.
Just Because AI Can Make Something Pretty Doesn’t Mean It’s Good Design
One of my top concerns with AI graphic design is that businesses can mistake a good-looking design with a good design.
An AI tool can create a logo, flyer, or advertisement. AI can create something that looks good in seconds. The colors might look great. The fonts could look good. Does that mean the design is going to work?
Not necessarily.
A good graphic design needs to do several things:
- Look professional and creative.
- Be easy to read and understand.
- Work in the places it will be used.
- Connect with the company’s brand.
- Make sense to the customers seeing it.
- Help the business reach its goals.
Maybe you’re designing a restaurant menu. AI might create a beautiful menu with great colors and photos. But if customers can’t find the food they want or read the prices, that design isn’t doing its job.
That’s why we follow the seven rules of graphic design in the work we do. A great design will look great and simply work.
Graphic Design Needs to Connect With Your Customers
When we start a new graphic design project, one of the most important things we look at is who the design is being made for.
Your logo, brochure, business cards, and any marketing designs must connect to your brand. They also need to connect with the people the business is marketing to.
A design that works great for a children’s clothing store probably isn’t going to work for a law office. The colors, fonts, images, and even the overall feel should be different.
AI can help us research the people a business is trying to reach. We can use it to learn about customer interests, explore ideas, and help plan a direction for the design.
A good designer knows what to do with all that information.
Your customers don’t know, or care, if a design was made with AI, Photoshop, Illustrator, or sketched on paper. They care about what they see and how it connects with them.
Human Creativity and Passion Still Matter
This is where I think creative graphic designers have the biggest advantage over AI.
AI can generate designs based on patterns and information it has learned. It can put together colors, shapes, fonts, and images. Some of those results can be pretty impressive.
But AI won’t bring the same creativity, personal experience, and passion as a skilled graphic designer.
A designer sits down with a client, listens to their story, knows what they’re looking to accomplish, and puts together ideas that fit that business.
We’ve had a client who tried creating a design with AI. What they came up with wasn’t terrible. It was just very plain and didn’t really represent their business.
We were able to use AI to help create something much better. The difference wasn’t that we had a special AI tool. It was our talented designers that knew how to use the tool, what prompts to use, and how to guide the process.
Experience, creativity, and knowledge of branding make all the difference.
AI Is Changing Graphic Design, Not Ending It
There is no question that AI is changing graphic design. Some of the simpler design tasks that used to take hours can now be done much faster. And some businesses may decide to use AI instead of hiring a designer for certain projects.
I don’t think we should ignore that.
But AI is not going to replace the need and demand for talented, creative graphic designers.
A good designer who can use AI has another tool to help in the job. They can test ideas, develop concepts faster, and spend more time on the creative portions of the project.
If you’re considering studying graphic design or starting a career in the field, don’t let AI stop you. Learn the new tools while you’re learning the skills for great design.
AI can help someone make a design. It takes a creative designer to know if that design is any good.
Good Graphic Design Still Starts With Creative People
AI isn’t going away, and I don’t think it should. We’re going to keep using it at Full Scope Creative because it helps our designers do great work.
But our focus will always be on the people behind the design.
Working on a logo, new branding, or marketing materials for your business? Remember that it isn’t just how the design is made. Pay attention to how it works for your business.
