How Symbolism Can Convey Brand Values

In the world of branding and design, visual metaphors play a powerful role in communicating complex ideas and emotions. They are the blacksmith of design, melding the essence of a brand’s values and personality to forge a blade that is expertly crafted and sharpened to cut a deeper connection with the audience. Maybe that isn’t the greatest metaphor, but by representing metaphors and symbolism as a blacksmith forging a sharp sword, I created a deeper understanding of the concept. You can do the same with symbolism in your branding.

These visual metaphors help to evoke emotions, communicate ideas, and differentiate brands in the marketplace. Unlike straightforward images, visual metaphors invite interpretation and resonate on a subconscious level with viewers.

In a visually saturated world, brands that harness the power of visual metaphors stand out. By tapping into universal symbols or creating new associations, brands can evoke emotions and perceptions that align with their core values. It can also add a layer of depth and make people look harder. Here’s an example, did you know there’s an arrow in the FedEx symbol? Between the “E” and the “x”? If you’ve read any of my previous articles you probably do, but even with that knowledge, I still look for it, and now you will too! This causes people to look harder at FedEx’s logo, which makes them think about it and recognize it. 

Not only that, but the arrow conveys the idea of speed and forward-moving, which is exactly what FedEx’s ideology is! It’s a great subliminal message that gets the point across while also making people look harder, making the brand more memorable and thus forging a connection.

More Examples of Effective Visual Metaphors

Take Nike’s iconic swoosh, for instance. Beyond its simplicity, the swoosh symbolizes movement, speed, and aspiration—core values that define the brand. Similarly, Apple’s bitten apple logo is synonymous with innovation and simplicity, reflecting their brand ethos through a minimalist yet powerful visual metaphor.

Choosing the Right Visual Metaphors for Your Brand

To effectively integrate visual metaphors into your brand identity, start by identifying your brand’s core values and personality traits. Consider what emotions or messages you want to evoke in your audience.
