Keyword Matching At Its Finest

Unless you are well-versed in marketing, specifically, marketing your website, you need to understand keywords. Or the power of keywords. This is extremely crucial in building a comprehensive site that not only looks good but is instrumental in keyword ranking.

If you’ve never heard of such a thing, that’s okay because the majority of the population hasn’t either. But this shouldn’t stop you from tapping into the influence it can provide.

Reading a keyword report may seem like a daunting task, especially if you don’t understand the nuances of your website search engine optimization. However, learning the importance of the keyword report will help you to utilize it to the fullest extent.

A keyword report will show you which keywords are working for your website. It also highlights which ones need more attention. When taken together, a powerful picture emerges that will move the needle toward positive outcomes for your business.

This article will provide an overview on how to read a keyword report and what it can mean for your business.

The SEO Keyword

By now, you’ve already realized the significance of keywords. They are the foundation that people build upon when searching or researching for a particular product or service. The right words define what it is they really want. It makes sense therefore, to pay attention to those words or phrases that moves a potential customer from A to B (as in Buy).

A side note here. When focusing on keywords a suitable place to begin is by asking yourself, “Who is my target audience?”  And what language are they using that you could “borrow” to draw them in? Being able to recognize your audience is one key to attaining the ranking you desire.

It’s also important to remember not all phrases or keywords will be applicable to your business. They might not even be worth chasing. So, focus on keywords that bring in the traffic and leave the rest alone.

For example, in the keyword report for Full Scope Creative, we rank for the phrase, “the whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts.” Yet, it’s doubtful that anyone will be searching that particular phrase while looking for a web designer in Green Bay, WI. Therefore, even though it has high traffic, it’s not worth pursuing.

Long-tail keywords. We’ve beaten this drum before it bears repeating. When people are searching oftentimes the long-tail keywords will help to clearly define what they truly want. Think of it this way, single word searches are vague, whereas a long tail…well, it’s all smooth sailing.

Picture this. You plug in “web designer” and instantly you get a million hits. But if you plug in “web design including graphic design, website hosting with SEO in Green Bay, WI.” Suddenly you are down to 10 choices. A whole lot easier to navigate, huh?

Keyword Search Volume

Much like it sounds, the keyword report estimates the number of times in a month a search is performed by users. Typically, these are searches using Google, but it can also refer to other search engines too.

When thinking about the power of SEO, search volume is the most popularly used measurement.  That’s because it indicates how prominent certain keywords are over others.  If used properly, it may predict user search traffic and voila! what we may get for ranking for them.

man calculatingFor our purposes today let’s look purely at volume. The higher the volume, the more lucrative the term can be. A keyword with a search volume of 10 obviously won’t bring in nearly the impact as a word with a higher volume.

That said, depending on your business, those searches may still be advantageous. The low volume searches are often easier to rank for, making them the low hanging fruit, which is attractive.

Some of the easiest places to search for keywords for your business might be found in the following places:

  • Google
  • You Tube
  • Amazon
  • Related searches

If this seems elementary, it is. There is a plethora of information when you use any of the above places. For example, when shopping on Amazon, you’re given not just one product or service but multiples. Each of them uses words or phrases to describe what you want.

We’ve added “related searches” as a bullet point because well…you’ll find that typically at the bottom of any search.  Once again, giving you more ideas, words, terms to choose from.

See, suddenly you have numerous ways to describe your particular topic.  You shouldn’t have to lose sleep over finding the right keyword or words to use. In fact, Full Scope Creative loves to help find the words to move you up in the rankings, all you need to do is ask.

Keyword Difficulty

Keyword difficulty is just what it sounds like.  Some keywords are more difficult to rank for than others. But it goes beyond this, and therefore must be addressed properly.

Starting with the term itself, “Keyword Difficulty.” You might have heard the terms “Keyword Competition,” or “SEO Difficulty.” FYI: they all mean the same thing.

The Keyword Difficulty is on a scale of 0-100. This means the higher the number the more work it will take to rank for the keyword.

Usually, if a word has a higher search volume, it will be classified as higher keyword difficulty. Likewise, if a keyword has a lower search volume, it will often  have a lower difficulty ranking.

So, what does this really mean? With the higher the keyword difficulty it will:

  • usually take longer
  • require more content
  • need more backlinks

in order to rank for it. If this occurs, we will often advise our clients to start out by focusing on keywords with lower difficulty. Then we will assist them to work their way up to the higher difficulty (higher volume) phrases and words.

The bottom line? By ranking for more keywords, even lower keywords, you begin building your domain name authority score higher and higher.
