Does your website design look dated?

Attract visitors and keep them engaged

visitor studying art pieces in an art museumIn today’s fast-paced digital world, having an online presence is crucial for any business. A website serves as a virtual storefront that showcases products or services to potential customers. However, it’s not enough just to have a website – the design and functionality of the site also play a significant role in attracting visitors and keeping them engaged.

If your website was designed several years ago, it may be time for an update. Trends come and go quickly in the digital world, and what was once considered modern and cutting-edge can quickly become outdated. In this article, we’ll explore some of the signs that your website design may be looking dated and what you can do to give it a fresh new look.

Signs of an Outdated Website

One of the most obvious signs of an outdated website is its appearance. If your site hasn’t been updated in years, chances are it looks old-fashioned and unappealing to users. This can be due to poor color choices, an abundance of cluttered text, or the use of outdated graphics that don’t fit modern design standards. Standards that were common in the 90s and early 2000s are past being outdated or even archaic, and possibly on to being quite harmful for a site. Whenever I see elements on a website that remind me of 1999 I instantly hesitate to do business with that website. Elements like popups, blinking text, text that scrolls side to side, photos that zoom in and out of the screen, and vertical navigation, are just a few of the design elements that are no longer credible in any way. Likewise, if a brick and mortar store looks dated (has dated items, dated clothing, dated floor designs, etc), the odds of success are limited.

Another sign of an outdated website is its functionality. If your site doesn’t work properly or takes too long to load, users will quickly become frustrated and leave. Back in the good ol’ days, we had up to 8 seconds to get a page to load. We barely have one second now. So if a page takes too long to load, it will again look dated. If service at a restaurant takes too long, the odds of people coming back is significantly reduced. Same for a website.

Another simple, and obvious, give away to an outdated website is outdated content. Content that was relevant two or three months (or sadly sometimes… years) ago is not only no longer accurate or useful to your audience, but can make your business seem out of touch with the times. Another problem with outdated content is that it can negatively affect your search engine rankings. Search engines prioritize websites with fresh, relevant content over those with old, irrelevant content. If you haven’t updated your website in a while, search engines may not even index it properly, which means potential customers won’t be able to find you online.

Having a secure online presence is crucial for any business. One telltale sign of an outdated website is if it lacks SSL certification. SSL encryption ensures that all data exchanged between a user’s browser and the website is encrypted and secure from third-party access. Without SSL certification, visitors to your site risk having their sensitive information compromised by hackers or other malicious actors.

Key Elements of Modern Web Design

In order to succeed in the competitive world of online marketing, businesses need to have a modern and professional website that effectively communicates their brand message and engages their target audience. Two key elements of modern web design that can help you achieve just that and mobile responsiveness, simple designs, and typography.

keysOne of the most important elements of a modern design is mobile responsiveness. With more (close to ‘most’) people accessing websites on their smartphones, ensuring your site looks great and functions well on mobile devices is paramount.

A second important factor in modern web design is a clean and simple design. Designs with ample white space have become popular because they provide a clear message without overwhelming visitors with too much information or cluttered visuals. When I first started designing websites, we would often find an empty space in a design, and fill it or remove it. Even if an empty space was filled with an image, it didn’t allow the site design room to breathe – which translates to a poor user experience. Another element of clean and simple designs is how icons are used. When you visit a site with icons that remind you of PowerPoint ‘95, you can rest assured you’re looking at a dated site. Modern designs use modern, simple, and impactful icons

Typography is another key element of modern web design and it can make or break your website’s user experience. Effective use of typography helps in conveying your message to the audience and creates a lasting impression on them. Typography refers to the style, arrangement, and appearance of text on a webpage. It includes font type, font size, line spacing, color choice, and more. Choosing the right font type is crucial for creating an engaging user experience. The right font can improve readability while also showcasing your brand personality. Sans-serif fonts are best suited for digital screens as they are easy to read at small sizes. Serif fonts are great for print materials but can be difficult to read on screen unless used in larger sizes. Additionally, using contrasting colors between text and background enhances legibility and draws attention to important information.

Take the time to assess your website

An outdated website can hinder your business’s growth and online presence. Signs such as slow loading times, lack of mobile optimization, and outdated design elements are clear indicators that your website is in need of a refresh. By updating your website, you not only improve user experience but also show potential customers that you care about their experience. Take the time to assess your website and identify areas that need improvement. Your website is often the first impression people have of your business, so make sure it’s a positive one. Don’t let an outdated website hold you back from achieving success online. Refresh your website today!
