A few months back I listened to a podcast that promised to quickly and easily boost my creativity and productivity. The only thing they recommended to do in the podcast was to keep your office clean. I was so disappointed. But then I realized that my office wasn’t as clean as it could be. The next morning I got in to the office about an hour early and cleaned. I got my office well organized and well laid out. That day, I saw my productivity skyrocket. The next day I found that my creativity was higher than usual when I was working on some designs.
I now make it a point to set aside some time every week to clean my office. I spend the last 5-10 minutes of every day making sure that everything is back in place and ready to go so the next day I can get in and starting working right away.
Even if you are one of the people who says “Yes, my office is a mess but I know where everything is and I work best this way,” take some time and do a little cleaning and organizing. If it doesn’t boost your productivity and creativity you can go back to enjoying your desk the way it was. If you can look around your office and even if just a few things are out of place, take some time and clean and organize, keep a neat and clean desk if nothing else. When I first heard that keeping a clean and well organized office would boost productivity and creativity I really didn’t think much of it. I have been pleasantly surprised.
